About Face: Cheek Freak Blush Balm Champagne Room + Rose and Ben Beauty: C41 Blush Brush

by Jennifer Chan

When it comes to blush, I’ve been a powder proponent for as long as I can remember. Call me old fashioned, but there’s something so classically nostalgic about sweeping a fluffy brush across a chic little compact and packing on that powdery pigment to the apples of your cheeks. When cream blushes and multi-balm formulas started to roll out a dime a dozen, I stubbornly stood my ground and kept my powder blush firmly in hand — dismissing the frenzy to dab and blend color with my own fingertips for as long as I could. Now that cream blushes are absolutely everywhere, I finally succumbed to the pressure of creating that just-pinched look and made it my mission to see if a creamy, buildable balm blush would pass the vibe check for someone like me who (lowkey) shuns the less-is-more approach to makeup.

You see, I’m a glam girl through and through, and when I have my full face on, I want to keep it intact from day to night. The idea of slicking on a slippery blush that may (or may not) show up on my medium-tan complexion gives me pause — especially since the last thing I want to do is layer on a product that might disrupt my perfectly applied complexion makeup below.

While I resisted cream blushes for some time, the About Face Cheek Freak Blush Balm eventually won me over and quickly taught me a lesson or two about being more open-minded about fresh formulations that earn their kudos. This gorgeous face product is both pretty and effective, which means it’s made its way to my everyday glam arsenal now, and I’m forever grateful.

About Face is a brand that I’ve long been impressed with thanks to its unwavering commitment to color payoff and impressive staying power. If ever there was a creamy, buildable blush that might blow my socks off, this could very well be it. The lightweight formula comes in 10 stunning colors and trust me when I say these shades really show up. Champagne Room is a punchy coral-pink shade that instantly adds a vibrant wash of color to your face and would perfectly complement all complexions. Whether you’re layering on sweaters or dusting off cocktail dresses for formal occasions, this beautiful blush adds a flawless finishing touch to any look.

The vegan and cruelty-free formula is packed with hyaluronic acid and meadowfoam seed oil for an instant hit of hydration, and the cushiony balm melts into skin in the most natural way. As mentioned, the color payoff is absurdly good, and I love dabbing and blending a touch of product on my nose for a seamless flush of color across the high points of my face. Best of all, this highly pigmented product doesn’t budge or fade over time — an important quality that I most certainly appreciate.
As for application, you can use your fingertips for a painterly effect, but I prefer a more precise application with the help of the Rose and Ben Beauty/C41 Blush Brush, which is, dare I say, perfect in every way. This stunning asymmetrical brush hugs the curves of my face, so contouring, blending, and diffusing product is an effortless and easy act that I actually look forward to now. The luxe-looking brush is made of the finest materials (i.e. densely packed bristles that feel heavenly on the face) and is weighted just enough to give a delicate dose of gravitas with each and every stroke.
And just like that, I’m officially a cream blush convert now.
