Farmacy: Honey Halo Hydrating Ceramide Face Moisturizer + Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm

by Dahvi Shira

As timing would have it, I tried Farmacy’s Honey Halo Ceramide Moisturizer at a point when my skin barrier was uncharacteristically compromised. While dryness is an ongoing issue for me, peeling and sensitivity certainly are not. I’m undergoing some general wear and tear with my skin right now, in conjunction with the aftermath of an intensive radiofrequency microneedling session. So, what does this mean? My skin needs ceramides!

With five years of hyper-focused beauty editorial under my belt—covering skincare, hair and makeup news and reviews for Glossy, Beauty Independent, Real Simple, Well+Good, Mane Addicts and more—I’ve learned that ceramides are one of the most underrated all-star skincare ingredients. Ceramides are fat molecules found naturally in the outer layer of skin that help prevent water loss to keep skin hydrated. Farmacy uses vegan, plant based ceramides that mimic our body’s own ceramides.

They’re key to protecting (and restoring) our skin barrier, so when we experience an acne breakout, sunburn, allergic reaction or other severe skin sensitivity (like me at this moment), the ceramides must be replenished. Even if your skin barrier is intact, these multifaceted molecules also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and keep the skin looking healthy and fresh. In fact, I raved about them in a TikTok I posted in January. Bottom line? It’s said you can have too much of a good thing—but when it comes to ceramides, I’ll respectfully disagree.

Ceramides are most commonly found in daily moisturizers and night creams, and are typically paired with hyaluronic acid. Another perk of ceramides in skincare is they’re considered safe for all skin types and aren’t accompanied by any known side-effects. That said, as with any skincare product you haven’t used prior, you always want to do a patch test before applying to a major area of the body.

When my skin barrier isn’t up to par, you better believe I’m ditching any AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) or BHA (beta-hydroxy acid) packed exfoliating products, and opting for something gentle, soothing and natural. Enter: Farmacy’s antioxidant-rich, ultra-hydrating moisturizer designed to leave all skin types looking plump and supple.

As a beauty writer who gets a bigger thrill from reviewing new products than I would ever get jumping out of a plane, I couldn’t wait to give this bad boy a go. I’m notorious among my friend circle for hoarding skincare in literally every crevice of my living space. If the space will allow it, the products will accumulate. What can I say? I want to try anything and everything for not only my benefit (and the benefit of my friends on their birthdays!), but because I pride myself on being someone people can go to for honest and well-researched recommendations on what may work best for their skin.

I had high expectations going into my first application of this Honey Halo moisturizer. I hadn’t tried Farmacy’s products before, but I see them all over social and when I’m at Sephora, and I’ve been curious. The plant-based, science-backed brand has a strong reputation for being gentle yet effective. They focus on farm-sourced, quality ingredients powered by potent actives to create thoughtful formulas because they believe good skin is rooted in healthy ingredients. I was especially excited because Honey Halo is one of the brand’s best sellers, among a selection of more than 50 products. Before giving it a go, I pursued the reviews, and of more than 1,000 comments listed, the consensus seems to be that this is a prime product for dry winter skin. And as an added bonus? It smells like honey, so here’s your way to smell sweet without attracting bees (or so I hope!).

Because almost any application of skincare has made my skin feel clogged and heavy lately, I have to keep my usage to a minimum. This is why I was thrilled to discover that a little goes a long way with this powerhouse product, formulated with a vegan ceramide blend (for moisture loss prevention and replenishing the skin barrier), buckwheat honey (for lasting moisture, soothing and hydrating) and fig fruit extract (for binding and restoring moisture).

Knowing that my currently compromised skin reacted positively to the formula, it’s something I’ll be able to use just as effectively (if not more) once my sensitivity is healed.

As a little bonus, I also got my hands on a travel size Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm. The 2-in-1 product has a sorbet-like consistency and melts makeup off like magic, while getting rid of grime. Like everything Farmacy does, it’s packed with healthy ingredients that really work. Sunflower and ginger root oils effortlessly remove even the boldest eye makeup and long-wear foundation without stripping or drying the skin while papaya extract exfoliates to retexture and reveal a youthful glow. It’s safe and effective for all skin types, including dry and delicate skin and smells amazing with a refreshing blend of lime, bergamot and orange essential oils. It was also a winner of Allure’s coveted Best of Beauty Award in 2017 as a trailblazing product that paved the way for cleansing balm innovations to come.
