HUM: Hair Strong Capsules + NatureLab: Perfect Clean 2 in 1 Scalp Scrub & Shampoo

by Kim Shapira

It’s easy to introduce myself as a dietitian since I’ve been a dietician for the last 28 years. However, very recently I learned that this reference immediately causes people to have a visceral reaction and shy away from me. So please allow me to rebrand what a dietitian means and explain how I wear that title like a badge of honor fully postured and ready to care for each and every person I meet. In college and graduate school I studied exercise science & kinesiology and psychology plus human metabolism & clinical nutrition, which basically means I studied how food, medication and illness all intersect and how to maintain optimal health.

I’m passionate about my own health and about helping others get healthy so that they feel and look their best.  When we feel and look our best, we move through the world with our best foot forward.

Let’s look at the word healthy, though. It literally means something different to everyone yet we are all busy comparing ourselves to each other. What if we just stopped comparing ourselves? What if we concentrated on our body and what our body needs independent of anyone else’s? What if we strive for balance as a measure of health? We are all in various states of balance. Our bodies are so good at keeping us strong and also depend so much on us to give it the nutrition it needs to make all of the magic happen. That’s why I love vitamins.  A vitamin is just a little insurance that we get the nutrition we need.

I do not believe all vitamins are created equally, of course, which is why I was so excited when I got my hands on the new HUM Nutrition Hair Strong Capsules. HUM loves their dietitians because their dietitians help formulate their products, and it doesn’t get better than that. They have had Hair Strong gummies for a long time, and it’s one of their best sellers.  And now they have a single Hair Strong capsule that is clinically proven to help support hair, skin, and nail health. This little capsule is full of nutrients that help all of our bodily functions that contribute to our overall well-being so we can find peace in our health journey. That’s what I am all about!

Let’s discuss what’s in this tiny little gem. We have biotin, folate, vitamin B12, Zinc, PABA, and Fo-Ti root. That right there is a solidly packed capsule.

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin also known as B7.  Water soluble means we pee out what we don’t need.  Our body doesn’t hold on to it like a fat soluble vitamin.  It is important to help strengthen hair and nails, and it also aids in the health of our skin which is our biggest organ.  It’s also super important for our nerve health. If we are deficient in B7, we may experience depression, fatigue, hair loss, skin rashes, brittle nails, and/or neurological issues. Our diets can cover us if we’re diligent about getting our B vitamins but sometimes we need a little support in the form of a supplement.

Folate, otherwise known as B9, is also a water-soluble vitamin, and we need it for multiple bodily functions. This essential vitamin is crucial for the making and the repair of our DNA, the formation and growth of our red blood cells, proper fetal development, maintaining homocysteine levels in our bloodstream to decrease our risk of heart disease, and it plays a role in reducing depression and cognitive decline. A balanced diet that includes folic acid will help ensure our overall health.

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that helps with so many body functions like the production of red blood cells, the health of our nerve cells, and the production of myelin (a protective cover for our nerves- it’s similar to the outside lining around electrical cords).  B12 is also super important for our mental health and brain health. Without it, we may feel numbness and tingling, low energy, weakness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, memory loss, depression, and/or experience balance issues.

Zinc is an essential mineral.  We absolutely need to get it from our diet or a supplement.  It’s important in our immune function, necessary for cell growth, and necessary to maintain our skin structure and health. It plays a role in making collagen and is critical for tissue repair. We need Zinc to maintain our sense of taste and smell plus it protects our cells from damage by free radicals like germs, pesticides, fungicides, toxins, etc. If we are deficient in Zinc we have a weakened immune system, hair loss, smell and taste abnormalities and skin rashes.

PABA is a compound that is part of the Vitamin B complex family. It plays a role in skin health by way of absorbing UV light.  It prevents premature graying of hair and may prevent hair loss. PABA also plays a role in making folic acid which we know is important for our DNA.  PABA is produced in your gut and has many benefits for skin and hair health.

Fo-Ti Root is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb (root-extract) used to promote longevity and the prevention of premature aging. That sounds great! Yes, please. It’s also associated with preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth by nourishing our scalps.

If healthy hair is a priority for you (and honestly, who doesn’t love healthy hair), then this supplement is a no brainer.  It’s working on your gorgeous locks from the inside out.  Now if you want to go the extra mile and add some love from the outside, then I suggest also using the one and only NatureLab Perfect Clean 2 in 1 Scalp Scrub and Shampoo once a week.

This life changing (I said it) scrub and shampoo is made with probiotic-rich sake water, which  balances the scalp’s microbiome.  That means it’s making the skin on your scalp super healthy to support hair growth. It uses sugar crystals to remove build up without drying out the scalp and hyaluronic acid to hydrate the hair. Platinum fiber also adds a glossed finish to your strands. The consistency is like any body scrub you’ve ever used.  You massage a dollop onto your scalp and then through your hair and rinse in the shower.  Follow it with your favorite conditioner and watch your hair get healthier!

The combination of the HUM Hair Strong and the scrub supports your internal nourishment and external care, promoting healthier, stronger, and more vibrant hair while also maintaining a healthy hair color. The use of both products has made a significant step forward in my holistic hair care routine. They both align with my commitment to promoting health and beauty from inside out, and they work beautifully. My lifestyle and work have taught me that by focusing on both internal nutrition and external care, you can achieve truly radiant health and beauty.

A little more about me and my work as a dietician.  I had called myself a sick kid for many years. I was in and out of UCLA from the time I was 12 until I was 18. All I wanted was to be healthy. A mentor of mine in high school (a doctor) had casually mentioned that “food can make a person sick or healthy”, and that was it for me. It was like a secret had been revealed, and now I had a choice. Did I really want to be healthy? Yes, and while I was in college “discovering” who I wanted to be when I grew up, I decided I was going to help others get healthy as well. I went to Tulane undergrad and studied Exercise Science and Kinesiology and Psychology. And then I went on to Boston University for graduate school and studied Human Metabolism and Clinical Nutrition. Which basically means I studied how food, medication and illness all collided, merged and formed pathways that would make a person sick or healthy. Then I immediately started a private practice where I was on a mission to help make everyone healthy through diets. Yep, I said it. Did you know the definition of a diet is lifestyle, not restriction? Only during this time, I thought that if I told everyone what to eat and how much, then for sure I would help them fix any metabolic dysregulation and I’d help them get healthy. I quickly learned that although food is the answer, humans are way more complicated because we mostly already know exactly what we should eat but we don’t eat it. Not because we don’t want to, but because other foods are just more fun.  In our minds, short term memories, and our trauma around food have hijacked our decisions. Many people eat what they know to be “healthy” and what they think is “unhealthy,” leading to a shameful relationship with food thereby creating more trauma and an unending cycle where it’s impossible to have sustainable results unless you feel free and peaceful. I had to pivot very early on to change the way I worked with my clients to help them find peace around food and sustainable results.

We don’t talk about our relationship with food enough. Yet, we all have one.  In my book, This Is What You’re Really Hungry For, I break down my six simple rules that I use to guide my clients.  I call them rules because they are meant to be practiced. Did you know that we do everything the way we did it 47% of the time? Did you know we sleepwalk through most of our day? So, yea, rules, until they become part of your routine.  You are going to need to be intentional, alert and even awake in your decisions. This practice leads to a new automatic, new routines, new patterns, a refreshed you aligned with your goals.
