NatureLab. Tokyo: Perfect Clean 2-in-1 Scalp Scrub & Clarifying Shampoo

by Dahvi Shira

In my five years writing about all things hair for Mane Addicts—among other reputable beauty publications—I oddly had yet to try any NatureLab. Tokyo products. So, when the brand came highly recommended by the 213 Deli team, I was excited to get my hands (and strands) on uncharted territory. Top it off with the fact that the Perfect Clean 2-in1 Scalp Scrub & Clarifying Shampoo has 4.9 out of 5 stars on the company’s website, my interest was officially piqued.

The clean beauty brand was developed by Rosa Takagi, and marries traditional Japanese beauty rituals with cutting edge, science-backed technology. It launched in 1997, but didn’t make its way to the states until 2018. And now, the brand’s Perfect Clean 2-in-1 Scalp Scrub & Clarifying Shampoo would saturate my six-days-soiled strands. The product’s hero ingredients include grape extract (a powerful antioxidant that helps reduce environmental damage), platinum fiber (a weightless, glossy finish) and hyaluronic acid (a humectant that retains water). The product is free from all major ill-advised ingredients—ie. parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oil and animals.

A creamy, white, granular consistency with light notes of violet and almond was the first thing I noticed when I opened the 8.1 oz. tub. It actually smells like vanilla if you ask me, but everyone’s senses are different. Scalp scrubs and clarifying shampoos can be tricky when it comes to color-treated hair, but I was assured from the label that the product was color safe. I drenched my hair, then added a generous helping of product to my scalp massager and applied the formula to my scalp, allowing any remnants to trickle down through the rest of my hair. I was pleased to find that after immediate application, my hair felt soft and smooth, versus dry and stripping
I followed with a rinse-out conditioner as advised, and then a multi-use leave-in conditioner when I got out of the shower. I let my hair completely air dry and even slept on it without a hair tie. I was shocked in the morning to find my hair in uniform waves with minimal frizz, vibrant color, and softness that allowed my fingers to effortlessly glide on through. I’ve tried so many products—and due to my naturally thick, coarse, chemically treated hair, not everything is a win. I can firmly say with confidence that this product gets my stamp of approval. It has earned its spot in the shower, versus back in my beauty closet.
