Thrive Causemetics: Sheer Strength Lip-Plumping Peptide Gloss + Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara

by Nicole Collins

I love beauty.  I love brand stories.  I love beautiful packaging.  I love the way a red lipstick makes me feel.  And most of all I love female founders with a really good why.  Why did they create a brand?  What did they want to offer the world?  What drives them?

Twenty years ago when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I admitted to myself that I adored beauty and wanted to make it a career.  I was less concerned then about what made a brand great and more concerned about which gloss gave the best glassy finish.  (Psst: it was MAC Lip Glass, obviously.)

Over the last couple of decades, I’ve worked with huge brands like Too Faced and Anastasia Beverly Hills.  I’ve worked with start-up brands and indie brands that became major like NYX.

Cosmetic chemistry has gotten better and better.  Ingredients have become more sophisticated.  Products are better than they used to be, and packaging is prettier and more sustainable.

So what sets one brand apart from another besides shades and payoff?  It’s the why.  Why does the brand exist?  What do you connect with besides the obvious?

I have a deep love for an indie brand because the (usually very passionate) founder is hustling every day to contribute.  They have a point of view, a story to tell and something unique to offer that the mass market brands simply don’t have.

Thrive Causemetics is one of my favorite indies.  The brand launched in 2013 after the founder, Karissa Bodnar, lost her best friend Kristy LeMond to cancer.  Thrive launched with false lashes that could be worn by people without lashes and people going through medical treatments. For every pair of lashes sold, a pair was donated to a cancer patient. Karissa’s why was to give back to people, to make people feel pretty, to make a real difference in someone’s life.

In 2014 lightning struck when Thrive launched its now cult classic Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara.  It was one of the first tubing mascaras that wraps your lashes in a tube-like coating that lengthens and literally does not smudge.  It’s like wearing falsies but they wash right off with warm water and a good soap or eye makeup remover.  The one-for-one model stuck and customers fell madly in love with one of the best mascaras on the market and the brand’s commitment to giving back.

Fast forward ten years and that mascara is a viral hit and an Allure Best in Beauty winner.  Beauty publications still regularly publish reviews of the mascara, and it’s still all over social.

The brand has also become a major player in the industry while remaining indie.  They have donated over $125M in products and dollars to a variety of charitable organizations across the USA.  Karissa’s ultimate objective is to donate $1 Billion. Amen.

If you’ve not tried the mascara, don’t admit it to anyone and get some immediately if not sooner.  Life changing.

And now Thrive Causemetics is at it again with its newest launch – Sheer Strength™ Lip-Plumping Peptide Gloss.  It’s a 3-in-1 peptide powered ultra-hydrating gloss that gives shine, smooths fine lines and plumps (over time) without using irritants.  The magic is in the proprietary Line-Refine Hydrating Complex™ that’s free from irritants and plumps the skin with a cooling feel for visibly fuller, smoother lips.

Most lip plumpers on the market use irritants that actually cause a little allergic reaction, which causes lips to literally swell. They’re pretty harmless and truly effective if you wanna plump pout without injectables, but I don’t love that itchy sensation at all.  This is a longer play because the ingredients fill in lines and plump over time, but that’s my speed.

One of the great perks of being in beauty is being able to try products before they launch. I’ve been using the gloss for a few months now, and I’m all the way in love with the shade Ruth.  It’s a great nude with a little shimmer that makes it perfect on its own or over any other lip shade.  I’ve been adding Ruth over my beloved Dior Addict Lip Glow in the shade Dior 8.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. A brand is nothing without a good reason for being and a meaningful why but then again none of that matters if the products aren’t any good.  Thrive Causemetics keeps me coming back for the killer products that are truly amazing and for their  commitment to charitable giving.  And you know I love a strong female founder!!
